Take a wild guess as to what Zapper's about to do now? But in order to do it he'll have to jump and zap his way through twenty levels and it won't be easy. Fortunately the gameplay is better than the story. Zapper is a pretty unique game compared to most everything else out there on the market. The gameplay is quite simple; you just hop around and either jump over or zap enemies and try to collect orbs and eggs and get to the end of the level.
In the tradition of some of the classic games this one is fairly easy to learn but will take some quick skill and wit to get far. Each level is made of up floor tiles in a grid-like pattern and Zapper can hop across either one or two tiles at a time. Captures and Snapshots Windows. Zapper is your classic story of revenge. Bad guy kidnaps family member's brother; family member embarks on major trial to bring justice to bad guy. The only difference is that in Zapper , the bad guy is a maniacal magpie queen and the justice seeker is a cricket.
Is Zapper's zest for revenge enough to carry this game? Not fully, but for the family gamer, there are some things to like. Zapper has several modes of play: Storyline, Arcade and Multiplayer. Yes, that's right multiplayer! Now the Campaign or Storyline game can best be described as Frogger 3D, which isn't that ironic considering that Blitz also developed Frogger 2. The game is played out in a similar fashion via an overhead view, giving you pretty good visibility to Zapper and his environment.
Only occasionally do other objects get in the way. Your goal is to hop your way through each level discovering magpie eggs, releasing globes of fireflies and avoiding or zapping the assortment of bad guys that get in your way.
While the levels are pretty simple and easy to complete, there was some thought put into them. There are hidden objects to uncover; yellow globes give you an added bonus if you collect them in the proper sequence and most importantly, the levels do increase in difficulty as you progress in the game. While I do have children, and therefore, try to judge games according to their intended audience, I personally found myself quickly getting bored with this game.
The Arcade mode doesn't add much more to the game other than the ability to retry levels without having to work your way back to them in the campaign mode. The multiplayer mode is somewhat interesting. Yes, it does seem a bit contrived, like it was sort of tacked onto the existing game, but my kids really liked it. The shock is often powerful enough to stun an encroaching enemy, if not eliminate it altogether. In spite of the hero's built-in weaponry though, this game offers lots of traditional 3D platform play, with tricky jumps to make, tough bosses to outsmart, and hidden power-ups to discover.
Zapper: One Wicked Cricket, which closely resembles the Frogger series, begins with our hero, Zapper, discovering his little larval brother, Zipper, has been spirited away by the evil Maggie the Magpie. Maggie is a bit of a packrat. She steals stuff from all over the world and replaces it with a vulture egg--not exactly an even trade. Leaving those eggs is more than bad taste, though. By placing her eggs everywhere Maggie hopes to have her henchbirds thieving for her across the land.
Needless to say Zapper enjoys his brother's company much more than his newly acquired vulture egg so he sets out to rescue little Zipper. To do this he must traverse 18 levels of puzzle action. To progress to a new level Zapper has to find six vulture eggs scattered throughout each level and squash them before they can hatch. He won't be going it alone, though, as several of his cricket friends are on hand to give clues along the way.
